The Lord enlists his servant Bartholomew's help in making Sly's duping complete. He requests they perform a play later that evening (which will mark the play we have come to think of as The Taming of the Shrew). While Sly sleeps off his binge, a group of players appears and are quickly enlisted in the Lord's duping of Sly. Should Sly not believe he is and always has been lord of the estate, he is to be told he was ill and had lost his memory. Sly is placed in the finest chamber and dressed in the finest clothes so that he will be convinced that he owns the lavish setting in which he finds himself. When the Lord returns from hunting, he decides to have some fun at Sly's expense and quickly devises a plan to have his household convince Sly that he is a lord, rather than a beggar. Christopher Sly, a beggar, is tossed out of an alehouse because of his disruptive behavior and quickly falls asleep in front of a Lord's house. The idea of a book set in these woods - called in reality Forest Park - came to Meloy from walks he and Ellis would take in them. On a rainy day in February, Meloy and Ellis were visiting Pittock Mansion - a chateaulike house that’s prominent in “The Wildwood Chronicles.” In the fantasy series, Pittock Mansion is surrounded by a village inhabited by talking animals - deer, badgers, rabbits and moles, who lead their daily lives alongside people. There are more adventures, conspiracies and intrigue in “Wildwood Imperium.” The Dowager Governess has returned - in the shape of an ivy-covered creature leading an army of murderous ivy monsters. In the second volume, “Under Wildwood,” there’s a plot to kill Prue, a mystic is murdered and Prue, Curtis and a rat named Septimus visit an underground city inhabited by moles. In the first book, “Wildwood,” published in 2011, Prue and Curtis venture into the wilderness to rescue Prue’s little brother from an exiled Dowager Governess who had him kidnapped by crows as part of her plot to wipe out all living things in the forest. And that means committing wartime atrocities. He's the leader, and the chip in his brain tells him Good Dog or Bad Dog. Rex is a cross between a dog and much else, but I pretty much pictured him as a dog in a mech with guns (this is, as it turns out, inaccurate). Humans tried robots, and the robots didn't work out so their next war machines were hybrids, flesh and blood with implants and genetic engineering. The characters are convincingly other-than-human but clearly conscious and deserving. The style of the prose is neither overwrought nor sparse but where it really shines is the dialogue. Then this book was recommended to me and damn does it make some deep cuts. Rampant misogyny in the year 3142, anyone?) and aliens being reskinned humans, about how I saw scifi more as a reflection of the time period when it was written than a look through a scope into a potential future. Not two days ago I was complaining about scifi never being weird enough, about humans just being human no matter what their setting (particularly in older scifi - where the dated human views are particularly noticeable. While the conceit of cyborgs, robots, consciousness debates and the rights of non-humans has all been done to death before, Dogs of War does it so well that I don't even care. If you read this book, I hope you find just as much meaning in it as I did. I think this was the perfect book for me to read at the right time, which probably supports the 4-star rating. As imperfect humans, we all make mistakes, and sometimes the moving on part can be the hardest thing to do. In order to begin the story, we must create our setting. This article seeks to highlight some of the arguments made by Jewish scholars and pop culture experts alike. Rabbi Simcha Weinstein has written a great deal about the Jewish origins of superheroes in his book, Up Up and Oy Vey. However, is that definitive proof that Superman is a good Christian? Larry Tye puts it well when he asks in a recent article, “How did Superman, originally a Jewish superhero, become a Christ figure?” Comic book experts have long noted Superman’s connections to Judaism. Many of the cinematic depictions of Superman are heavily laden with Messianic overtones and Man of Steel is certainly no exception. Though some may view the movie studio’s interest in this as a purely manipulative tactic to bring in more revenue, it does raise questions. In fact, according to CNN, Warner Brothers even marketed Man of Steel to various Christian ministries and included sermon notes comparing Christ to Superman in materials titled “Jesus: The Original Superhero.” For some, the idea that Superman belongs to Christianity seems obvious. From Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie in 1978 to Man of Steelin 2013, when religious parallels are made explicit in Superman movies, they tend to be overtly Christian ones. |
